Hi, The Other Dave,
One recurring theme throughout everything I’ve written to date, has been the Trolls. As EMP games we do three Trolls. I painted my first Troll for use in Silver Bayonet, and this one was Green. Loved it as it was so quick to paint. <Link to Silver Baynet article>
Followed this up with a Blue one, and on this one I spent a little more time on it, and it looked cool – Ice Cool, if I say so myself, as no one else will <Link to Blue Troll Article>. I did tease a Red Troll would be good.
And I then got distracted, but in a positive way. As usual I was in the Sheffield Store, and someone commented on the Green Troll sat in a display cabinet. The comment went along the lines of they thought at first it was a Green. To explain a traditional method of miniature creation is to sculpt a Green which can be used to create a Master Mold. We have a lot of Greens floating about. So, in short, my painting ‘Masterpiece’ was mistaken for a Green. After consoling my broken heart and shattered ego I had to agree, and it came home with me that day.
I added highlights and this subtly changed the miniature, especially on the face, hands and feet. The fur not so much, close-up you can see the different but from a distance it’s still a green blob, but now with a face.
What do you think? The Red Troll. I repeated the process I used on the Blue and Green Troll. Base colours with highlights on the fur, face, hands and feet. The Troll is holding a stone in each hand, and I wanted it to look as though they were full of fire and heat, I’m not sure I achieved that look, but it does look as though it’s hot – I think.
So, what have I learnt, completely bias EMP Trolls are easy, quick, and Great to paint! In seriousness I was reminded that when we paint, or game, a doorway into our imagination is open, and I like that. If you got here, thank you. Comments, questions and feedback are always welcome.
