Perry Spanish & why Strong Tone on white might not be the best choice

Oh wow, the Other Dave here!

Last time I teased a little on the War Games Atlantic Zombie Sprue, and in truth I’d already built the models ready for painting. But that all changed - as usual I was chatting to John in the Sheffield store, and he suggested a pause on the zombies to switch to a new sprue.

Said sprue is the new Perry Miniatures Napoleonic Spanish Infantry (2), from the Firing Line box. Being a sad individual, I’m of course thinking Silver Bayonet and the start of a new warband.

The sprue looks good: five unique bodies and legs, with various heads and musket positions and some other extras.

Building these involved a lot of trial and error matching the arms and muskets together. In a box you get a painting guide and more importantly some instructions, but I only got the sprue!

John suggested I use the painting guide, and I did look at it, but I’d be lying if I said I followed it - inspired is maybe more like it, maybe. Back to the models, I am really impressed with the variety of the poses and heads, and I’m pretty sure in hindsight each model has a different paintjob.

White is prevalent, and I had to redo these elements several times as the grime effect I like to do just wasn’t right. I used Army Painter’s Strong Tone, and it was too much. In the end I applied a whitewash that kept some of the grime effect and brought the white back. Got to say - this last bit feels as though I’m pitching a washing ad; I’m not, honest!

As I mentioned previously, this is a great start to a Spanish Silver Bayonet Warband. But what about the Zombies? Well I painted them at the same time, but you’ll have to wait until next time – they’re worth the wait, I promise.

Anyway, thanks for getting this far. Feedback, questions, suggestions and other comments are welcome as always.
