Hi The other Dave,
It has been a little while since my last piece as I have had a week and a bit off. I went to a 60th Wedding Anniversary which is a first for me, and it wiped me out. That is not to say it stopped me completely on the model front, but it sure did slow me down.
Today’s piece is about Vitrix’s Late World War II Germans; two sprues are available a basic infantry and special weapons. I just had the basic infantry, which is enough to make ten figures. The sprue; the figures are dynamic and the weapon options good, ranging from a basic bolt action rifle; the MP40 sub machine gun; the STG44 assault rifle, and finally a light machine gun like the MG42. The sprue also includes other accessories and a good variety of heads. This a first glance looks like and excellent sprue, however when I got into the thick of it, I think it’s just a good sprue. Let me explain, the bodies have limited arm options, so it does take some careful planning to achieve the weapons you want for a squad. Also, while I remember Victrix on their website does have a colour driven diagram that illustrates which arms go with which bodies. John, I believe is sorting this out on our website for connivance. As an aside if anyone has ever built Games Workshop models then sometimes the instructions are a little wonky. I always think it adds to the excitement of the build. Well maybe someone at Victrix feels the same because I think the diagram was a bit wonky with the options on either body 6 or 9, can’t remember which, but it caused me some confusion for a while, or I’m just stupid.
I built the squad to try and use all the weapon options, I also play Bolt Action from Warlord Games, so I wanted to be able to use them in this ruleset. To achieve this a minor bit of kit bashing was employed. I removed the sniper scope and reattached it to a different rifle/figure. Ok, my normal disclaimer these are not painted historically accurate, the colours and camo patterns just kinda happen. All bar one paint is from Army painter, and it's a jolly mix of Version 1 & 2 paints, it all seems to work together quite nicely. Onto the painting. Primed grey. Smocks were painted either using Desert Yellow or Necrotic Flesh, Uniform Grey was used on some arms and legs. GW Abaddon Black was used on boots and bits of strapping. My Army painter Matt Black has finally given up. Oak brown was used on wood like rifle stocks and some of the bags. The face and hands Kobold skin was used as this was the nearest skin colour to hand, with a flesh wash on top. Dark tone was used for the guns, and any other metal. The exciting part was the camo, I considered a mix of Oak Leaf and Pea Dot patterns to show off a bit. However during the application I discovered Blotched and it actually looks ok, so, no showing off. To achieve Blotched I used Monster Brown, and wet mud as well as a reuse of Oak Brown and Necrotic Flesh I also think I used a bit of Elven Flesh. Finally Strong Tone was applied.
In conclusion I think this is a good sprue, and I’m pleased with finished results. If I was to recommend anything I would suggest you pick up the special weapons sprue at the same time, it broadens options on the infantry sprue and introduces anti-tank weapons, just that alone for me makes it a must have. Well, if you made it this far, thankyou, as usual comments, questions and feedback are welcome. Till next time.
